Paraformances

Really this is the best space on the list. It is the only one that really feels open to the public, as noted by the large numbers of tables and chairs - a godsend to messengers during this very wet winter. All others on the list are either inaccessible, unmentioned, or guards make it actively or passively discouraging to sit around.

This is one of the first private-public spaces we discovered in SF. The small sign indicating "dedicated public open space" outside 101 second street is the only indication to the general public that this is perhaps one of the better privately-managed public spaces in downtown san Francisco.

On rare warm and sunny days, large glass-panel windows swing open to create a sidewalk permeable facade, but with the average cool SF afternoon the "Art Pavilion" appears more like a corporate office lobby than part of the public realm."

Getting there
Look out for the glass constructed building at the corner of 2nd and Mission Street. The main entrance to the galleria is under the overhang on 2nd street. Alternative entrances include the side entrance on Mission Street as well as through the back exit of the nearby Starbucks.

Surveillance & Gatekeepers
Since it is in a corporate building, expect tight security while on site. There are three located on the ground floor and one upstairs. Given that this is such a large open-aired space, these cameras do not seem to present a confined, paranoid feeling to the atmosphere. The security at the front desk is also hidden away behind a glass wall at the rear of the space where the corporate elevators are located.

Local Dress & Behavior
Expect casual behavior in a corporate atmosphere in this well used space. Being located on a busy corner yet confined in a quiet, glass-made enclosure, makes this space ideal for people-watching while relaxing. Since this is an indoor space, smoking and lively cell phone usage are inappropriate behaviors. Many people do these activities directly outside the main doors towards 2nd Street. Eating, reading, socializing, and people-watching are all commonly seen here.
