Paraformances

  Rocks in the stream
Another stop on the 6/27 Rebar/SOOI lunchtime paraformance jam tour.

I admit it: I was totally skeptical about this space. It didn't seem to offer much in the way of amenity that isn't already part of the downtown public space matrix. Calling it a "sitting area" (as the plaque does--indeed, in quotes) even seems to me generous. The Agapanthus ad nauseum, the boxwood mohawk, the constipated little skateboard clips--nothing here really makes me feel like staying.

But when four of us came here to sit and hang out for forty minutes or so (along with a homeless fellow who kept us company), I had to change my mind. This may be the best god damn paraformance spot in SF.

Occupying the seatwall and letting the human traffic flow past is like being a rock in a stream. And you can be a smooth rock, letting the water sheet over you without a ripple, or you can... enough with the metaphors--You can try out some paraformance level 3! Among the paraformance scores we tried out:

- "In on it"
- "The different drummer"
- "Gestural deviation"
- "Found sound imitation"
- "My question is..."

Best part is that the audience is constantly changing. Most people didn't notice anything out of the ordinary, but some seemed to pause at sensing a subtle shift in the matrix...

Can one of you guys with pictures post them up?

Paraformance ideas?
Even though a paraformance at 200 California would basically be a paraformance on the street...there's nothing wrong with paraformance on the street...

Getting there
This tiny seating area is located directly if front of the Charles Schwab building on the northwest corner of California and Front Street. It is a mere extension of the sidewalk on Front Street..

Surveillance & Gatekeepers
The Charles Schwab building has a full view of the seating area from its large glass walls. There are no direct gatekeepers to this space probably from the fact that surrounding pedestrian crowds can view any suspicious activity..

Local Dress & Behavior
Although formal business attire to street casual is accepted in this space, spending a more than a few minutes may feel awkward because of the close proximity to pedestrian traffic..
